I watched an animated movie on my parent's black and white TV in the late 1970s that had a scene where there was a picture inside of a picture inside of a picture. In my fading memory over time, I still remembered that there was some kind of creature on the left side, but I thought the creature was within a mirror within a mirror within a mirror.
I tried to look it up various times over the years with no luck. I thought it might have been Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure since it was one of the animated movies I remembered watching on TV in the late 1970s. After skipping through the movie on YouTube a few times, I couldn't find the scene.
On May 6 or 7 of 2023, I decided to do another search. For my first try, I put this in the search bar:
1970s animation “picture within a picture”
That led me to a link that talked about the Droste effect. For my second try, I put this in the search bar:
1970s “animation” Droste effect
One of the results was a reddit thread where somebody had the answer. The film is called The Mouse and His Child. I thought the movie was kind of weird and boring back in the late 1970s, but the Droste effect scene seemed important. I didn't know what a fractal was at the time, but it's like the scene brings out some kind of fractal truth from inside of you when you watch it for the first time as a child. You know it's important and has something to do with everything.
The embedded video below should automatically jump to the scene when you play it.
